DIRECTORS STATEMENT
Bei meinem letzten animierten Kurzfilm «Selfies» setzte ich mich mit dem digitalen Porträtierwahn unserer Zeit auseinander. Das Grinsen der Selfies widerspiegelt oberflächliches Glück. Kontrastierend hierzu setze ich mich in meinem aktuellen Projekt mit peinlich unangenehmen Momenten des Lebens auseinander, die möglichst bald aus der Erinnerung getilgt werden sollen: paradigmatisch habe ich den Besuch beim Zahnarzt gewählt als Alltagsmoment, das allen vertraut ist, aber im Gegensatz zum Selfie-Wahn kaum je Beachtung findet. Dem Flimmern der Scheinwerfer folgt das grelle Licht der Operationsleuchte, wo im letzten Film Smiles aufgesetzt wurden, klafft das Maul nun auf in Schrecksperre.
War Selfies eine Flut von Bilderfolgen, steht nun die Tonspur des Zahnarztbesuches im Zentrum. Die zahnärztliche Aufforderung «Think something nice» lässt synchron zum Bohren und Kratzen wunderbare Bilder über die Leinwand flimmern. Doch auch die beste Ablenkung ist nicht weniger prekär und kurzlebig, als jedes grinsende Selfie.
DIRECTORS STATEMENT
In my last animated short film, “Selfies”, I explored today's obsession with taking pictures of ourselves and putting them on social media. Forever smiling and grinning, our selfies mirror superficial happiness.
By contrast, my current project deals with awkward and uncomfortable moments in life that we usually try to forget as soon as they are over. I chose an appointment at the dentist's - familiar to us all, but far less likely to be elevated to sharable content. The spotlights and smiles illuminating the space in Selfies have given way to the practice's surgical lights and to gaping, wide-open mouths - in fretful anticipation of the treatment to come.
Selfies was a never-ending stream of pictures. This film follows the rhythm of the sounds in the dental practice. Centred around the dentist's encouragement, "Think of something nice", the film's drilling and scratching sounds are accompanied and contrasted by evocative images. However, even the best distraction is just as fleeting and uncertain as a grinning selfie.
