Synopsis

In einem Feuerwerk von digitalen Selbstportraits wurden Hunderte von idyllischen, peinlichen und schrecklich verstörenden Selfies zu einer einzig-artigen Kurzfilm-komposition arrangiert. Die künstlerisch nachbearbeiteten Einzelbilder ziehen sich zusammen zu einem schauerlichen Grinsen, das den Abgrund menschlicher Existenz über-strahlt.

In a veritable firework display of digital selfport-raits, hundreds

of quaint, embarrassing and dread-fully disturbing selfies were arranged in a unique short film composition. Single photos, artistically reworked, consolidate to form a ghastly grin that outshines the abyss of human existence.

A metaphor for the double-entry bookkeeping we live by every day. We know about our own mortality andyet behave as if we live forever.

Une métaphore de la comptabilité en partie double dans laquelle nous vivons chaque jour. Nous connaissons notre propre mortalité et pourtant nous nous comportons comme si nous vivions éternellement.

Directors statement

Mein Film bewegt sich an der Grenze zwischen Alltag und Kultur. Ob wir wollen oder nicht: Selfies wurden zu einem zentralen und kultur-übergreifenden Moment unserer Alltagskultur. Otto Normalverbraucher lebt damit genauso wie die Starlets und Flüchtlinge. Die Art der Inszenierung der Portraits lebt von Zitaten und Referenzen anderer Bilder. Mein Film bewertet die Portaitier ungswut unserer

Zeit nicht. In dem ich das Publikum mitnehme auf diese atemberaubende Bilder- reise, wo mit unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen ge-rechnet werden muss, möchte ich einen neuen Blick auf dieses zeitgenössische globale Kultur -phänomen werfen.

My film is a walk between everyday life and culture. Whether we want it or not: selfies have become a major, cross-cultural aspect of everyday life. Joe Public is as much a part of this as are starlets and refugees. Staging the self-portraits is based on other people’s quotes and on referencing existing images. My film is not a valuation of the self-portraying craze of our times. Rather, I am taking my viewers on a dizzying journey of images that may have unwanted side effects, and offer them a new perspective of this current cultural phenomenon across the globe.

Hintergrund

Selfies sind das charakteristische Phänomen unserer Zeit: unabhängig von Geschlecht, sozialer Schicht oder kultureller Zugehörigkeit knipsen und filmen sich die Menschen aller Länder in alltäglichen und unmöglichen Situationen. Das momenthafte und partikulare Ereignis des Augenblicks wird durch den Transfer ins Internet zu einem zeit- und grenzenlosen Dokument.

Selfies sind somit längst mehr als hübsche. Erinnerung-sfotos fürs Familienalbum, sie dokumentieren das eigene Leben wie auch das von allen anderen. Selfies halten nicht nur inszenierte Glücksmomente fest. Wie eine kurze Internet-recherche schnell klar macht, betreffen sie ebenso sehr die dunkle Seite der Conditio Humana.

Es entsteht ein Voyeurismus, der weitgehend unab-hängig vom fremden Blick ist. Über Selfies definiert man sich selbst. Selfies stiften die neue Identität.

Background

Selfies are the typical phenomenon of our times: regardless of gender, social standing or cultural background, people around the globe film and take snapshots of themselves everywhere, whether in daily situations or impossible predicaments. What ususally is a fleeting event, a moment caught in time, is transferred to the internet and becomes a timeless document across borders. Selfies have become much more than pretty photos for the family album; they are a witness to a person's life and the lives of others. Selfies don't just capture staged moments of happiness.

As research on the internet quickly revealed, they also document the dark side of the human condition. This creates a kind of voyeurism that is largely independent from an onlooker's gaze; with selfies, you define yourself. With selfies, you reinvent yourself - they are your new identity.
